“We have sent a mail to the Archeological Survey of India informing them about the recovery. We also contacted them over the phone. They have assured us they will collect the idols which are in our custody," a police official said.
Police have taken in their possession three Vishnu idols recovered at the time of digging from the backyard of a house in Nakashipara block of Nadia district and asked the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) to examine them to ascertain their age.
Prima facie, the idols appear to be ancient, officials and locals said. The idols were found on Monday afternoon while digging soil at the backyard of the house of Samar Sardar of Sardarpara village in the Gacha area.

The digging of soil was going on in front of the house for the last two-three years, it is learnt. Archaeologists say various historical and archeological monuments are buried underground in the area from Lalbagh in Murshidabad to Krishnanagar Nabadwip in Nadia on the eastern bank of the Ganga river.
“It is extremely common in this area for such idols to be found. The area from where the idol was recovered also has historical importance,” said a police official.
