Babu’s portfolio

The victory of former chief secretary Manish Gupta from the prestigious Jadavpur seat where he defeated outgoing Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has made many of his former colleagues at Writers’ Buildings happy. One of them is S P S Kahlon, who is currently principal secretary (transport) and was joint secretary (Home) when Gupta was Home Secretary,12 years ago. Grapevine has it that Kahlon, who was very close to Gupta, had even called to congratulate him. In fact babus at the Writers’ are quite eager to know which department Gupta will be heading. While some say he will be in charge of Home Affairs, others say he will be given the department of urban affairs development.

Wooing Didi

After the shift in power, now it is the time for the shift in bureaucracy as well. Expecting a thorough reshuffle in the state government’s police and administration set-up,some of the senior bureaucrats who stood along side the Left leaders are now desperately trying to reach out to the Trinamool albeit indirectly. Instead of directly meeting senior Trinamool leaders, these high-ranking officers are cosying up to their colleagues who had maintained friendly ties with Trinamool for a long time.

A senior police officer, who is considered close to Trinamool, said: “In last two days,I received more than 30 phone calls, all from the senior bureaucrats, who requested me to fix an appointment with Mamata Banerjee as they want to explain her the ‘compulsions’ that made them to stick with the CPM leadership.”

Ananda lives on

After the completion of elections in the state, everyone is praising the Election Commission. So far, this has been the most peaceful elections in the state without any major incidents of violence. Elated by its success, the office of Chief Electoral Officer has decided to not to end the life of its mascot — Ananda Babu,a Bengali Bhadralok clad in dhoti and kurta — which was used to urge people to exercise their franchise. “Even after the elections,Ananda Babu will be at work. He will look into the voters’ list. He cannot die after one election,” said CEO Sunil Kumar Gupta.
