A teacher of a government-affiliated school is on the run after hitting a class VIII student on Monday morning.

A teacher of a government-affiliated school is on the run after hitting a class VIII student on Monday morning. Sabidul Haque,a teacher of St Barnabas High School,Kidderpore, allegedly slapped Kaji Baharuddin,a class VIII student.

The incident occurred at 11.30 am during the early morning attendance. The child was talking to friends and the teacher warned him not to do so. But when he did not listen,Haque flew into a fit of rage and slapped him so hard that he fell on ground.

The child was taken to the nearby CMRI Hospital where an X Ray and CT scan were conducted. He was released after treatment at the hospital. According to Baharuddin’s family members,he was hit on the left cheek and had a swelling there. They lodged a complaint with the Ekbalpore police station but withdrew the case in the evening, saying it was the fault of the child and the teacher should not be penalised.

Meanwhile, the school, which is affiliated to the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education, has taken serious note of the issue. The principal,Sukhendu Biswas, himself took Baharuddin to hospital and got him treated.

“I myself took the child to the hospital. The teacher is new in service and has not completed even two years. However, there is no trace of the teacher after the incident,” said Biswas.

The principal said that a governing body meeting of the school would be held on Tuesday to discuss the matter. Biswas informed that the school has given clear directions to teachers that there should be no “physical or mental harrassment of children”.
