After the last date for withdrawal of nomination on Saturday,a total of 7,029 candidates remain in the fray for the civic polls slated for May 30.
The state Election Commission announced the numbers today, adding that a total of 7,587 nominations had been filed.
For the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, the CPM will contest on 99 seats, while the Congress will contest on 108 seats. The Trinamool will field its candidates on 140 seats, while one has been left for its ally SUCI.
While the BJP will contest from 89 seats,Left Front partners like the CPI,Forward Bloc and RSP have fielded candidates on 14,11 and 10 seats respectively.
Significantly, two wards one in Bishnupur Municipality and another in Arambag Municipality will go uncontested.
Till now,we have reports of two wards going uncontested, said Mira Pandey, state Election Commissioner.
A complaint was, meanwhile, filed today against Trinamool candidate from ward 25 Smita Bakshi, after it was alleged that Bakshi gave false information while furnishing her personal details.
We have asked the returning officer to look into the matter and see if any legal proceedings can be initiated against her, Pandey said.
Interestingly, even during the last civic polls in 2005,Bakshi had been accused of providing false documents at the time of obtaining her Schedule Caste certificate. Although she remained the councillor from her ward,Bakshi was not allowed to vote in the monthly meeting of the KMC. Criminal proceedings had also been filed against her.
