The severe mountains of Tibet hide many secrets. One of which is The Tibetan Mountain Patrol,a self-sponsored outcast regimen established to eliminate illegal slaughtering of endangered Tibetan Antelopes by impoverished local and out-of-province peasants. The Chinese film,Kekexili explores the rugged terrains of Tibet and engages with the issues plaguing the area like the blatant poaching of Tibetan Antelopes.

Kekexili in many ways represents the new China. A country steeped in history and willing to embrace global culture. The Chinese Film Festival on at The Spring Club in a way, celebrates that very aspect of China. It also aims at dispelling the stereotypical concept of associating Chinese films only with martial arts.

Apart from the 2004 film Kekexili the festival will showcase other award-winning films like Crouching Tiger,Hidden Dragon and Warrior of Heaven and Earth.

A film like Light Rail No 3,talks about isolation in an increasingly urbanized China. The film narrates the story of Zhang Yan and Zheng Siji,a Beijing-based couple who buy a house in the suburbs, which necessitates daily travel to work in the city by Light Rail No. 3. They work very hard to pay off their mortgage and to facilitate their son’s career. However, their irregular hours and busy schedule estranges them.

The 2002 film Together, revolves around a thirteen-year-old violin prodigy Liu Xiaochun and his father who move to Beijing from a small village to fulfill their shared dream of finding Liu a good violin teacher. After studying under two teachers, however, the boy finds that he has learned not just music, but what is really important in life.

The Chinese Film Festival is on at the Spring Club til September 20. Screenings start at 7 pm. For more details contact 9836900102
