A 23-year-old M Tech student of Jaypee Institute of Information Technology (JIIT) in Noida Sector 62 was stabbed more than five times in a women’s washroom in institute’s dining area Thursday evening, said police.
Priyanka Sharma, a native of Himachal Pradesh, suffered extensive injuries in the vicious knife attack at about 8.30pm, said a police source.
The source added that the assailant left the knife in the washroom.

Sharma was admitted to Fortis Hospital and her parents are with her, the source added. “She is in the ICU, but her condition is stable,” said the source.
In her initial statement to police, Sharma said a dining hall worker attacked her.
Police, however, are waiting for her to give a detailed statement.
“ Prima facie it appears to be a hate crime. She has received stab injuries on her stomach, thighs and hand and there are signs of resistance. It appears to be the work of an insider. We have taken finger prints of all workers on the campus. Investigation is on to nab the assailant,” said Anoop Kumar, CO-2nd City, Gautam Budh Nagar, Friday.
Sharma and her friends had come to the dining hall in Annapurna block for dinner after returning from a mall in Ghaziabad, said the police.
“Then she went to the washroom. Moments later, a housekeeping employee heard her cry for help. He found her writhing in pain and blood oozing out
of her body. He claimed there was no one else in the washroom when he found her,” said Kumar.
JIIT administration manager Ajit Tomar said he took Sharma to the hospital in the college ambulance.
“A deep stab injury was visible on her forearm. It seemed like the work of a psychopath,” said Tomar.
He added the JIIT administration has started an internal inquiry into the unprecedented attack on the institute’s premises.
Tomar said the Annapurna block has two separate dining halls for boys and girls.
“For the festival season, the rules have been changed to bring together students who are fasting and those who are not. Accordingly, boys and girls are dining together. The first floor where the incident happened is primarily the boys’ dining area and has a washroom for girls,” he added.
