Valson Thampu appoints Alumni Executive

The Alumni Executive of St Stephen’s College was reconstituted on Sunday, with principal Valson Thampu nominating a host of powerful individuals into it.

A few Stephanians have, however, accused Thampu of favouring those who are close to him, while replacing others. Former governor Ved Marwah has been re-elected president, while Chief Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi is the vice-president.

Thampu’s nominees include Delhi Lokayukta Manmohan Sarin,Delhi High Court judge Sanjay Kishen Kaul,Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrasekhar,Editor of Pioneer newspaper Chandan Mitra,NDTV Group Editor Barkha Dutt and senior journalist B G Verghese.

The principal on Tuesday said there was nothing unusual in him nominating members to the Executive,as he is the patron of the body. “The principal alone has the right to nominate members to the Executive; and this was the practice until recently. As patron of the Executive, there is a special relationship between the principal and the alumni — the principal is the head of the family,” said Thampu.

Thampu maintained that, though he nominated members to the Executive, the members elected their office bearers.
