Unexpected in November,season’s first fog in city

The first dense fog of the season descended over the Capital on Sunday,throwing the city’s road,rail and air traffic out of gear.

Visibility fell to 50 metres in parts of the city,maximum temperature on Sunday stood at 27.7 degrees Celsius.

The first dense fog of the season descended over the Capital on Sunday,throwing the city’s road,rail and air traffic out of gear. Officials at the Met department said the fog will intensify on Monday,with mild respite expected towards the middle of the week.

The minimum general visibility fell to 200 metres on Sunday,it was below 50 metres in parts of the city. The visibility was 700 and 1,500 metres on Friday and Saturday,respectively.

According to officials at Met department (Palam),the fall in temperature in the last few days,coupled with high humidity (at a maximum of 100 per cent on Sunday) and calm winds had led to fog conditions.

The Met department declares fog when visibility falls below 1,000 metres and humidity rises to more than 75 per cent.

Temperatures,meanwhile,have shown a downward trend over the past two weeks. While the maximum recorded temperature on November 1 was 32.6 degrees,it fell to 27.7 degrees Celsius on November 20. The minimum temperature on Sunday was 14.6 degrees Celsius,against 15.4 on November 1.

Met department stations in some regions of the NCR reported temperatures as low as 12.5 (Pusa) and 12.8 (Jafarpur) degrees Celsius on Sunday.

The department has predicted fog in the morning and clear skies through the day for Monday.

The temperature is expected to remain between a maximum of 29 degrees and a minimum of 14 degrees Celsius throughout the week.
