The Sector 39 police booked the accused under sections 115(2)[causing hurt], 352 (breach of peace), and 351(3) [criminal intimidation] of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and seized his Maruti Suzuki Ertiga car.The Noida police Thursday arrested an Uber driver for allegedly misbehaving and intimidating women passengers after an argument over taking a particular route during a ride.
The accused has been identified as Brijesh Kumar, 38, who was arrested from his house in Noida’s Haibatpur. This was after the police took cognisance of a purported video of the incident posted on social media by one of the passengers, Tashu Gupta, and registered an FIR at the Sector 39 police station.
According to the police, the incident occurred Tuesday morning near the Golf Course metro station when Gupta and four of her friends booked a cab from the Botanical Garden metro station to Sector 128.
The alleged altercation between the driver and Gupta began after she requested Brajesh to take an underpass instead of a U-turn to avoid the traffic on the route. Gupta alleged in her complaint to the police that Brajesh ignored the request and reacted aggressively.
In the video that Gupta posted on social media, Brajesh can be heard saying,“Paise de (give money).”
The women respond saying, “Kis baat k paise (money for what)?”
When the women begin filming the act, Brajesh can be seen asking them to delete it.
Gupta later took to social media to narrate her ordeal. “He told me to do whatever I want, go and get him hanged and started abusing me again and was about to hit me as he was very aggressive. I was sitting right beside him. When we asked him to pull the car to the side, he said that he would teach us all a lesson,” Gupta said.
“Then he parked the car, got out, went to his car trunk, and told us: ‘Tu ruk, tujhe to main abhi batata hun, aaj tujhe maar ke jail bhi jana pade to chala jaunga (wait, I will teach you a lesson, today even if I have to kill you and go to jail, I will do it)’, and pulled out a white rod to hit us,” the woman added.
Uber responded to her in a message: “Hey there, this is concerning. Such behaviour is unacceptable, and we prioritise your safety above all else. Kindly send your registered Uber account contact details through Direct Message, and our safety team will contact you shortly.”
