Two killed as platform crashes at Manesar

Two labourers died and four were seriously injured when a temporary platform used to ferry raw material up and down snapped and fell at an under-construction site of Machino Plastic Limited in Manesar on Saturday.

Police said more labourers could be trapped under the debris.

“A lot of debris is involved here. And there is still a chance of people trapped inside. At present,there are reports of six people — two dead and four injured — being pulled out,more might be trapped,” said Hameed Akhtar,DCP (South).

According to police,excess machinery and raw material had been placed on the platform,which could not take the load and broke loose from the binds. It plunged two floors and landed on labourers standing below,killing two on the spot,police said.

Naresh,a resident of Rajasthan,and Bhagirath,from Madhya Pradesh,received fatal head injuries.

It took rescue officials more than three hours to dig through the debris and pull out the trapped labourers,police said.

The injured — Kavasra,Imtiaz,Apraval and Krishna — were rushed to a hospital and two of them are said to be in a critical state.

“There is a lot of debris. Too much raw material and machinery was placed on the platform. Despite the use of cutters,it took us a long time to rescue those trapped,” said H Sihag,chief fire officer.

Machino Plastic Limited provides parts to Maruti Suzuki India Limited. The gates of the premises were locked and entry was stopped after the incident.

Fire officials said the priority is to clear the debris and check if there are others trapped. An inspection will be conducted later to ascertain if proper safety and precautionary measures were in place at the site.

“The safety aspects might not have been in place. There are labour laws under which the company can be booked,” DCP Akhtar said.
