Two persons have been arrested for cheating more than 250 residents of South Delhi on the pretext of installing Internet connections at their houses, police said. The duo allegedly collected Rs 4 lakh and spent it all on gambling.

“The accused have been identified as Gaurav Arora (28) and Gulshan Kumar (20). They were arrested on May 19 from PVR-Saket area,” said Chhaya Sharma,Deputy Commissioner of Police (South).

The arrests came following investigations into a complaint lodged at the Fatehpur Beri police station on May 15. According to the complaint,a person by the name Rohan approached the victim after he put in a request for a broadband connection on a service provider’s website.

Police said Rohan used fake identity cards and documents to convince the victim to subscribe to the connection for Rs 6,800. The accused also gave him an acknowledgement slip.

Rohan remained in contact with the victim for two to three days and then disappeared, police said. The victim filed a complaint with the Internet service provider only to realise that no one by the name Rohan was employed with the company. He then approached the police.

“A team of police surveyed various addresses of the broadband subscribers in Delhi and NCR. Investigations revealed that more than 50 addresses were fake and the connections had been obtained on the basis of fictitious IDs on more than 20 handsets,” said Sharma.

Police suspect the accused had in-depth knowledge of the company’s plans and policies.
