Two brothers were crushed by a speeding bus of the Delhi Transport Corporation in the Ashok Vihar area of Northwest Delhi on Saturday.

Two brothers were crushed by a speeding bus of the Delhi Transport Corporation in the Ashok Vihar area of Northwest Delhi on Saturday.

The police said eyewitnesses told them the brothers lost control while trying to avoid a stray cow and were hit from behind by a speeding DTC bus, plying on route no. 912 (Vishnu Garden and Parmanand Colony).

The police said the victims, identified as Love and Manish Jain,27-year-old twins, were going to attend the inauguration of a shop at Dipali Chowk in Rohini on their motorcycle when the accident took place near Lakshmibai College around 9.15 am.

“The brothers died on the spot,” a police officer said. The police said their bodies were handed over to their family after a postmortem examination at Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital.

The victims — who lived in Janta Flats in the Ashok Vihar area — are survived by their parents and a younger brother.

They worked at a sari shop in the Chandni Chowk area and were going for the inaugural function of a new shop opened by their employer when the mishap took place.

Mahesh Jain, their father, said,”Both had been working in the same shop for the past five years and would commute together on the motorcycle.” He said their bodies were taken to hospital half-an-hour after the accident.

Jain runs a small plastic components unit in the Samaipur Badli area. Residents, meanwhile, repeatedly alleged that accidents like this have become common because of the stray cattle in the area.

Pradeep Verma,a resident, said,”We have complained to the MCD several times about the stray cattle in our area. The authorities, however, just haven’t bothered to do anything about it.” Verma said cows keep roaming around the streets and main roads, making commuters vulnerable to such accidents. Love Jain, who was driving, had to swerve to the right to avoid hitting the cow.

Bus driver Shamsher Singh has been arrested and booked under sections 279 and 304 A of the IPC.
