Mother, daughter held in Noida for smuggling turtles

A woman and her daughter were arrested on Thursday for allegedly smuggling to Noida Indian flapshell turtles, which they had caught from a river in Mathura.

Noida Deputy Commissioner of Police Ram Badan Singh identified the women as Kamlesh alias Kannar and her daughter Jyoti, residents of Mathura. “Following a tip-off, we detained the women from Noida Sector 10 and seized 14 Indian flapshell turtles from them,” he added.

“The turtles are priced between Rs 1,000 and Rs 10,000. After they are treated by vets, we will leave them in their habitat,” said Singh, adding that the two women have been booked under the Wildlife Protection Act.
