Tunda gang man commits suicide in Dasna

Even the high security barrack for criminals at Dasna prison of Ghaziabad failed to prevent a prisoner from committing suicide late on Friday night.

Shakeel,a member of the Abdul Kareem Tunda gang,committed suicide by hanging himself in his high security barrack. An accused in the 1996 bomb blast in frontier mail train,Shakeel was a resident of Pilkhuwa village of Ghaziabad.

According to jail superintendent V K Singh,the criminal hanged himself with a cloth noose. He knotted a piece of cloth in a loop and hanged himself. He was rushed to the district hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. Singh added that the body has been sent for postmortem.

A member of the infamous Tunda gang,Shakeel was arrested in 1999 and lodged in Tihar jail in Delhi. In September 2006,he was shifted to Dasna prison as the cases in which he was facing criminal charges were registered in Ghaziabad. He was facing trial under various sections of the IPC and the Explosives Act.

According to the jail superintendent,a magisterial inquiry has been ordered in the alleged suicide case.

On September 13,2008,Munir Hasan,an inmate of Dasna prison,allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree in the prison compound.

Hasan had been in prison since August 8.
