Truck on wrong side crushes cop,driver arrested

A 40-year-old constable posted with the Delhi Transport department was killed when a goods carrier ran him over in Azadpur,Northwest Delhi,early on Saturday morning.

A 40-year-old constable posted with the Delhi Transport department was killed when a goods carrier ran him over in Azadpur,Northwest Delhi,early on Saturday morning.

Police said the truck,which had a J&K registration number,was travelling on the wrong carriageway.

The truck driver,Rafiq Malik (30), has been arrested and booked for rash driving and causing death by negligence. Police said Malik has a previous case of of rash driving and causing grievous injury against him in Haryana.

Police said Constable Hemraj was returning home after winding up his work at the RTO check-post around 4 am,when the incident occurred near the Azadpur Metro station roundabout.

Hemraj was crossing the road when the truck,which was carrying groceries,mowed him down. The truck was coming from Shakti Nagar side via Azadpur.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest) Romil Baaniya said: “Constable Hemraj died on the spot.”

He was declared dead on arrival at Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital. Hemraj was a resident of Sadar Bazaar; he was married and has two sons.

“It was an accident. There was no foul play and any element of malafide intention has been ruled out,” Baaniya said.

Malik is a resident of Pulwama in J&K. Police said a medical examination confirmed that the driver was not drunk.
