The investigation by district magistrate (west district) B S Jaglan into the escape of two undertrials from Tihar Jail has revealed that a security personnel was deployed to patrol the sterile area after the peripheral wall of jail Nos. 8 and 9 but, a few minutes before the prisoners escaped, the security personnel was removed by his superior. No one was deployed in his place.
“Senior officers have reportedly issued a showcause notice to the officer who ordered the security personnel to leave,” a source said. Reportedly, the officer has replied that he did so because of staff shortage.

Faizan, 19, and Javed, 18, climbed two walls and broke through one more to escape. The two undertrials were lodged in Ward 4 of Jail No. 7, which is located in Block A, Barrack 5, meant for inmates aged between 18 and 21. Tihar Jail sources said they started their escape bid by scaling the wall of jail No. 7 and jumping into jail No. 8.

Sources in Tihar Jail told The Indian Express that investigation has revealed that a few days before the incident, Javed had attempted to escape from jail No. 7, where he was lodged, but was caught by security personnel. Caught, he allegedly misbehaved with other inmates. He was then given 30 days’ punishment by the jail superintendent for allegedly using criminal force and assaulting other inmates. “On Saturday morning, after he was released, both the prisoners reportedly went back to the jail after informing the security personnel that they were going for yoga practice,” a source said.
But investigation has revealed that a few minutes before the two inmates jumped over the wall of jail No. 7, a security personnel deployed in between jail Nos. 8 and 9 was removed from his position by his superior. From 7 am to 12 pm, no security personnel was deployed in this area.
Meanwhile, Jaglan on Wednesday visited the spot from where the prisoners escaped and met jail officials, including Tihar DG Alok Verma.
