South Delhiites suddenly have a pantheon of new diners. Now,Veda,the ornate restaurant set up by designer Rohit Bal and restaurateur Alok Aggarwal at Connaught Place in 2005,has branched out to DLF Place mall at Vasant Kunj. The new outlet,clearly more spacious,has shed the heavy ostentatious look. The walls are plastered with glass images of peacocks and lotus,and glow under a string of ferry lights. Only a handful of heavily adorned Venetian mirrors in the private dining area remind you of the unnecessary splendour of the original.
The menu,mostly a transplant of the first,packs a punch with Crispy Spinach Chaat (Rs 375) for starters and a fusion broth of Sweet Corn and Curry Patta
(Rs 150),a summery green soup laced with a strong mustard flavour. While you wait for the main course,the table is decked with a tub of vegetable crispies. The food,however,maintains diplomatic niceties with its controlled use of spices and chillies for the expats in the neighbourhood. Even the complimentary tray of accompaniments conveniently skips the fiery achaars that are mandatory at Indian diners and sticks to the sweet-tangy homemade chutneys. There is pear chutney served with a generous dose of cumin,and eggplant chutney that has the vegetable coated in syrupy jaggery. Vedas signature Murg Hara Pyaaz Masala (Rs 585) makes an appearance with its rich creamy flavours,but its the Prawn Biryani (Rs 475) that is the highlight of our meal. The earthiness of mint and coriander offset the undertaste of sea.
You can also nibble your way through their seven-course tasting menu,priced at Rs 1,175 (vegetarian) and Rs 1,475 (non-vegetarian),serving a variety of tikkas and curries.
The sweets menu is limited to the none-too-new Faluda Cocktail (Rs 175) and Lychee Ki Tehri (Rs 175),but thankfully both give the high that cream and sugar are ordained to.
