The Paper Poopers

A new illustrated book tells children how elephant dung is converted into paper.

When Marie Jenefsky-Titus came home one evening, laden with gifts for her children, her son,Jonathan,12,was amused. The gifts were from Haathi Chaap,a Delhi-based organisation which makes a unique kind of paper — from elephant dung. “I found this so interesting that my mother and I went to Jaipur and visited the factory where this process of making paper out of poop takes place,” says the 12-year-old American. The mother-son team decided to write a book,The Recycle of Life: From Elephant Poop to Paper (Rs 250,self-published),which was launched on Friday at the residence of Kamal Meattle,CEO of Paharpur Business Centre.

The 12-page illustrated book is for children. Written by Marie,an American social worker living in Delhi, the little book tells the story through Jonathan’s eyes. The brightly coloured illustrations, based on a concept by Delhi-based artist Danielle Smith Llera, shows the narrator,Jonathan, witnessing the poop-to-paper process. “After removing fibre from the dung,it is mixed with vegetable dyes and then turned into large sheets of paper,” recounts Jonathan. He is preparing for the Jewish coming-of-age ritual,Bar Mitzvah, and says that the proceeds from this book will be given to the needy. “That’s my mitzvah (good deed) project,” he adds. The book cover is made from elephant dung paper but the pages are from recycled cotton paper. “Dung paper does not take well to writing,”says Marie.

The book is not available in stores. Contact Marie for a copy at 7838577750
