The Beer Hunt

Cool down this summer with a pint of cheer

Since it doesn’t look like the sun is cowing down anytime soon, beer could turn out to be your new best friend. There is nothing more satisfying on a hot summer afternoon than a swig of frothy chilled beer that sends you floating to lager heaven. The choices for this alcoholic beverage — made by brewing and fermenting cereal grains, mostly malted barley and hops — have always been aplenty, and though you could get a bottle of beer at any alcohol shop in the city and have a swig at home, there’s a huge variety out there for the asking.

Apart from international and domestic beer brands like the Italian Corona or the Indian Kingfisher, for something more exciting head to Rockman’s Beer Island at Ambience mall,Gurgaon. It has freshly brewed beer at its two pubs — Bavarian and Kegs and Barrels. There are four varieties to choose from — lager, lager strong, dark beer (made using roasted malts) and wheat beer (often containing a significant proportion of malted barley). “Our beers are got on the tap. The dark beer and wheat beer are very popular,” says Sachin Sharma, manager,Rockman’s,which has huge beer tanks in the restaurant. “Wheat beers are the first thing people ask for at the open bar. It has a distinct taste and is great for a summer’s day,” says Sherin John, the bar-in-charge at Smoke House Grill at GK-II and Smoke House Deli in Vasant Kunj, which stocks up on unfiltered wheat beer,Schneiderweiss from Germany and Chimay Red and Blue beer from Belgium.

But if sipping plain beer is too dull, you can mix and match it with other spirits, something that chef Tarun Kapoor of Patio at the Metropolitan has been trying out this summer. He has teamed up peach schnapps with beer for a light coloured rosy drink, called the Peach Spiked Lager,or the Met Summer Special with blue Curacao, apple juice and beer. “Beer goes with almost everything. Beer and Limca also tastes good and appeals to those who don’t like the taste of beer by itself. These cocktails are doing well, the younger crowd loves experimenting with them,” says Chef Kapoor.

Getting more adventurous with the beer cocktails is Howzzat,a cricket-themed pub at Galaxy hotel,Gurgaon. Howzzat brews its own lager, dark and wheat beers. The Black Dragon (dark beer,Sambuca and lemon),Bowled Out (premium beer, lemon juice, tabasco, chat masala) or the Captain’s Knock (wheat beer, apple juice, ginger and lemon juice) are a few of the interesting beer cocktails served here. “There is almost no way you can go wrong with beer,” adds Hemant Nautiyal, manager. “We have mixed beer with even wine and vodka,” he says, joking that no one leaves the pub sober, considering even the beer is more than spiked.

And if you are tired of sipping beer, you can have a bite of it. At the Patio, the Bobotie recipe has beer as an ingredient in the baked lamb dish. You can also try the chicken quesadillas where the chicken has been marinated in beer. Smoke House Grill has a Tenderloin stew made with beer. So as you tilt a pitcher of beer, you can be happy that summer has given you something to cheer about.
