Delhi Police on Friday claimed to have foiled a plan by alleged members of the Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) to assassinate religious and political leaders ahead of the assembly elections in Punjab.
Police said they arrested two members of the BKI,one from Punjab and another from the Shalimar Bagh area of Northwest Delhi. The two men, police claimed, were waiting for a consignment of assault rifles and rocket launchers to carrying out the attacks.
Sarabpreet Singh (30) was arrested from Shalimar Bagh on Thursday evening. On the basis of information he provided,Jaswinder Singh (30) was picked up from Anandpur Sahib in Punjab. Three pistols,45 cartridges, five mobile phones,a WLL phone,a laptop and two pen drives were recovered from them. Police said they were scanning the laptop for information on BKIs overseas operations.
Officers said though they suspect that an RDX-laden car seized in Ambala in October this year was meant for this module, they were waiting to question the duo. Sarabpreet was said to have been given the task of recruiting youths into the BKI.
We have to confirm that the explosives seized in Ambala were meant for this group. They were getting directions from their leader in Hong Kong. Sarabpreet also stayed there for about a month. All the pistols recovered from them are of Chinese origin, an officer said.
Police said the module was tasked by BKI chief Wadhawa Singh and an operative,Kulbir Singh,to assassinate three religious leaders in Punjab and Haryana, besides a number of politicians, during the upcoming Assembly elections.
He was tasked to eliminate Baba Ram Rahim,Baba Pyara Singh Bhaniara and Baba Ashutosh of Ludhiana, apart from certain political leaders of Punjab, said Ashok Chand,Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime).
Chand said Sarabpreet,a school dropout, first met Kulbir in Hong Kong in 2001. When he met Kulbir again in March 2010,he was inducted into the BKI. Kulbir promised him financial support, and said the BKI would arrange for explosives, assault rifles, pistols and rocket launchers, Chand said.
