To pacify contractual TB workers on strike since August 26,the Delhi government agreed in principle to a 30 per cent hike in their remuneration on Monday, and sent a recommendation to the Central government.
The contractual employees under the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP),including house to house workers who administer medicines, have been demanding regularisation of their services, that will entitle them to leaves, pensions and salaries at par with permanent workers.
Health minister Dr A K Walia exhorted the striking contractual employees to resume their duties and go house to house to ensure patients continue to take their stipulated medicines.
We are sympathetic to their demands, but the regularisation of their services is a long drawn procedure and cannot happen overnight. The continuation of their strike would adversely affect patients, hence, the strike is totally uncalled for, Dr Walia said.
With no decision to call off the strike,Delhi Health department sources said if the workers did not resume their services the government would be left with no option but to resort to stern measures under the law, including implementation of Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) and termination of their contract.
CM attacks civic bodies over welfare of safai karmcharis
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit attacked the BJP on Monday while addressing a gathering of safai karmcharis working under the three BJP-ruled municipal corporations.
Accusing the civic bodies of not fulfilling their responsibility, she said the corporations must provide the safai karmcharis with better service conditions and give them a certainty of service.
While assuring her government would sympathetically consider the demands raised by the karmcharis and take appropriate action,Dikshit also attacked the corporations for not utilising funds meant for the welfare of safai karmacharis.
