The Delhi government has waived the entertainment tax for the hockey World Cup to be held in the Capital from February 22. The decision was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by the finance minister,A K Walia,on Tuesday. The 15 per cent tax on each ticket has been waived, which will help Hockey India save Rs 6.25 crores. This amount will differ according to the number of spectators. The maximum attendance for the games will be 17,000, said a finance official.
The tickets prices range from Rs 100 to Rs 7,500.
The government has also agreed to waive luxury tax for the participants and other delegates who will be staying in Capital during the Cup. This waiver will save another Rs 45,000 for the body. The government charges 10 per cent tax of the rack rent of hotels. Over 400 players are expected during the World Cup.
Other pending proposals
The federation had also asked the Delhi government to provide 15 AC low-floor buses. That proposal is still pending with the government. DTC has expressed their reservation in offering the buses as the cost is steep. The government spends Rs 10,000 on each bus every day.
The Delhi government had recently given exemption on luxury tax for nearly a month to the Commonwealth organising committee. The exemption will cost the Delhi exchequer Rs 30 crore. The government, however, had rejected the Commonwealth Organising Committees request for a waiver on 12.5 per cent Value Added Tax waiver on all Commonwealth Games purchases.
Meanwhile, the organising committee has also asked for waiver of entertainment tax. The state government is likely to give in-principle approval. We havent taken any decision as the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee has not worked out the pricing of tickets, added the official.
