Taking the lead

One might define India as a democratic country, which is for the people,by the people and of the people but present-day India is of the politicians,by the politicians and for the politicians.

Politics in India has always been a “dirty game”. But the times are a-changin’. Quest asked our young readers about their role in changing the political scene in India.

One might define India as a democratic country, which is for the people,by the people and of the people but present-day India is of the politicians,by the politicians and for the politicians. This needs to change. It is only the youngistanis, the new-breed young politicians, who can transform India into a developed nation with their power of fresh ideas, ambitions, ability and the attitude. India being the youngest nation, only the youth can set right the wrong. The more the youth are sensitised to the flaws in our democracy the more they will rise to correct it.

Nowadays in India there are a lot of problems like corruption, poverty, child labour, and many more. The youth with their opinion and thoughts can change this whole world. If they they use their bright minds for the welfare of India, they can easily bring a revolution in India. They know that corruption is bad, poverty has to be removed from India, and child labour in India should be stopped. They can also help by taking part in politics and with their bright ideas make India a prosperous and a successful family. So to conclude, the youth have the power to create revolution in India.

Youth— the doers of the society symbolise energy, vigour and newness. The youth have always been bashing the old and superstitious beliefs that have been practised in society. India’s freedom is the result of the young blood that spill during the war against British. The youth are the block builders of any country who work hard to boost the economy. Today the majority of the population is below 28 years, which means our policies should be framed according to their needs. Many young politicians like the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi have carved a niche and transformed the outlook of India in the international arena. He not only introduced IT reforms but also initiated decentralisation and governance in our administrative system. The oldies of the politics should give a way to young and emerging leaders who are capable of bringing in practical and positive changes in the society. Many old leaders in the thirst of power do not encourage the youth’s involvement in politics but they should not forget that the youth are the present and they are the past.
Dynamic, courageous and self-motivated youth taking part in active politics with its new set of ideas can only make our politics transparent and people centric.

Revolution in politics is an upheaval,in which the government is replaced,or the form of government altered, but in which property relations are predominantly left intact and this can be done by the combined effort of the youth of the country. NGOs and Social Activists should empower the youth in wiping out unfit politicians. The youth should be in the system, regardless of the experience; they have immense potential. Indian population constitutes about 41.05 per cent of youth according to the 2005 records and this is about half a billion people. If they pledge to revolutionise politics their victory is certain. A prudent reason for the youth not entering politics is that they think it is a waste of time and just involves money and fame game. A popular saying goes,“The word ‘politics’ is derived from the word ‘poly’ (meaning many) and the word ‘ticks’ (meaning blood-sucking parasites),” and is justified as a reason for the reluctance of the youth in entering politics. But on the contrary it can be said “It’s never late to wake up.”

As soon as word “politics” is heard or said,an image is instantaneously formed in everyone’s mind and the image is that of corruption, false promises and nepotism. We all have witnessed that politicians indulge more in unfair activities rather than rendering their services to contribute in developing the nation. The roots of corruption in politics are so deep that one feels that it is impossible to get rid of the same. However one can ask is it possible to bring the change in today’s politics? My personal opinion is yes. I really don’t feel that this can be done only by the youth. To bring about radical changes in our political system what we need is honest, dedicated and educated people. These people can be of any age. What is important is to become a catalyst for continuous change and bring in innovative ideas to provide solutions to various issues, problems of society and nation as a whole. Hence while young people have energy and drive for trying out new things,it doesn’t anyways guarantee improvements. What we need is the right mindset, with selflessness and with a vision to build the nation.

Since youth constitute 34 per cent of the total population of India,it is called a young nation. Youth power can be neglected at our own peril. For the youth can make or mar our society. Their creative potential is as immense as their destructive potential. Don’t we feel proud of our engineers, doctors, sports persons, film and TV artistes etc who have made India young and vibrant? Thus the youth if properly guided and provided opportunities can be catalyst for all round growth of the nation. Let’s take the example of the most popular leader among the youth today. No prizes for guessing —Rahul Gandhi. A year ago,Rahul Gandhi embarked upon his mission to democratise the Youth Congress and NSUI,with the idea of attracting the youth to politics, hardly anyone could have said for sure that he would be successful and yet,the youth is a flavour of the season today. Everyone wrongly assumes that young Indians are allergic to politics and change. Instead they are eager to be active agents of change. It is the young who can and will change the country and the way it is run. Politics and elections are seen as an ideological challenge but young people see it as management challenge. As the young enter politics, the possibility of their own being able to participate in the process would cement their faith in the equality of opportunity and change. We owe our future to the daring thought and action of the youth today.
