The Dalit community of Sunpedh village will come out in large numbers to protest against the ‘Upper Rajput caste’ at Jantar Mantar on November 1.

The decision comes after a Mahapanchayat was held by the Dalit community earlier this week in Ballabgarh. It was attended by over 300 people from the community from different districts including Gurgaon, Taoru, Sonipat and some even from Madhya Pradesh.

At the Mahapanchayat, representatives of the Dalits decided to hand over a memorandum to the President and the Prime Minister to look into the interests of the Dalit Samaj.

The speakers, most of whom were from the Bahujan Samaj Party, also debated the possibility of leaving Hinduism and choosing a religion “that does not believe in the caste system”.

“We are also demanding the inclusion of Section 120B (punishment for criminal conspiracy) in the Sunpedh burning case because it was a calculated and planned attack and we want immediate arrest of the four remaining accused who are roaming free,” said

K P Gautam, National Spokesperson of Bharatiya Samanvay Sangathan (Lakshya).

The speakers also demanded that the compensation money be increased from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 2 crore and added that the Dalit community was angry with the government’s promises of giving a government job to Jitender.

“We want the government to at least give an appointment letter to Jitender stating that he has been given a government job. We have also put forth a demand for a fast-track trial of the case in Delhi once the CBI enquiry is complete,” said Rohtash, District Secretary, BSP.

The Dalit community also alleged that top police officers have been party to the “oppression of the Dalits by Rajputs” in the area.

In the Mahapanchayat, speakers also demanded that police officers concerned be questioned by the CBI for allegedly shielding the culprits.
