Stopped at checkpost,youths,family beat up cops

Two police officers were critically injured after a group of villagers allegedly beat them up near a checkpoint at Haldwani crossing near here on Saturday morning.

Two police officers were critically injured after a group of villagers allegedly beat them up near a checkpoint at Haldwani crossing near here on Saturday morning.

Police said personnel at the Haldwani crossing stopped a car during checking around 8.35 am. “Three youths,identified as Chaman,Naeem and Pradeep,were in the car. When head constable Raj Singh asked them to show the car papers,they refused and started arguing,” said Arun Saxena,SP Rural,Gautam Budh Nagar.

Meanwhile,one of accused allegedly called up friends and relatives,who gathered at the spot soon after. Police said all assailants belonged to Jalpura village in Bisrakh.

“There were three cops in the PCR — head constable Raj Singh,constable Mukesh Dixit and their driver Ramkala. They were brutally beaten up by the villagers,who also damaged their car. Singh sustained critical injuries and is admitted in hospital,” said a senior police officer.

The villagers,however,accused the police of asking for money after the youths failed to show the car papers.

The police have arrested two persons,Rohtash and Deveneder of Jalpura,who were among the mob,and registered FIR against 10 others under various section like rioting with deadly weapons,member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object,voluntarily causing hurt,intentional insult wit intent to breach peace,criminal intimidation,causing hurt to public servant and attempt to murder.

A motorcycle and car have also been seized by the police.
