Artist Farhan Mujib builds on his fascination with Bollywood in his latest exhibition
Exhibiting at the garden theatre at Triveni Kala Sangam is like being on home turf for 64-year-old Aligarh-based artist Farhan Mujib. It is here that he had made his debut in the art world in 2003. There are memories, he says as his latest solo show gets underway at the Delhi gallery.
On the wall, his paper collages lead into a world of miniatures. Those familiar with Mujibs works will notice Bollywood stars who have made an entrance into his images where the more familiar motifs previously ranged from marble floors to pigeons, parrots and kites.
In one work,Mujib fits in a panel of Bollywood posters, from Amar Akbar Anthony to Coolie, while in another,Bipasha Basu and Priyanka Chopra come together with film stars of yesteryear like Waheeda Rehman and Guru Dutt.
The NGO Khushii approached me to work on a Bollywood theme two years ago. Thats when I realized that Bollywood merged well with my style and I decided to continue, says Mujib, pointing out that photographs of movie posters come from poster collections of several friends, including director-actor Farhan Akhtar,Siddhartha Tagore of gallery Art Konsult and hotelier Priya Paul.
In his collages on board, where several pieces of paper are pasted together to form a composite image, there are representations of kites and a grandfather clock from Mujibs home, clothes hanging out to dry in a dhobi ghat opposite his Delhi home on Hailey Road, photographs of Indian miniatures scanned from a publication and magazine cuttings. Mujib began making collages more than a decade ago.
The former physicist in Aligarh Muslim University also roams with his camera in search of images. For instance, one of his works on display shows minarets photographed at Orchha fort, with photographs of Qutub Minar doors superimposed; both combine to form another monument. I create new and old monuments, smiles Mujib.
The exhibition will continue till March 30. Contact: 23718833
