Star walk

Haute couture easily translates into haute drama at the HDIL India Couture Week (ICW). If it is not the most theatrical ramp (complete with mirrors and enormous chandeliers),then it is the action behind the scenes that is sure to mesmerise. Despite the pullout of Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla, the ICW managed to get off on the right foot with a fabulous jewellery show put together by Devaunshi Mehta,Maheep Kapoor,Queenie Dhody and Farah Khan. With A-listers like Karan Johar,Hrithik Roshan,Dimple Kapadia and Zayed Khan in the front row and 18-karat stunners on the catwalk, the show got a huge hand from the house.

Diamonds are a joaillier’s best friend and they ruled the ramp. The first lady of Indian jewellery,Mehta, stuck to her favourite combination of diamonds and emeralds in earrings and necklaces. Kapoor’s chunky but tasteful art deco pieces were unfortunately in the sad company of Anna Singh’s badly crafted gowns.

Khan’s show was the best put together — the “Cascades” collection, replete with precious and semi-precious stones in fluid designs, was wonderfully supported by the uber-sexy cocktail dresses and bondage heels of Gauri-Nainika. The front row erupted into vociferous cheer when a nervous Suzanne Roshan walked down the ramp wearing a multi-strand,knotted diamond necklace and exchanged glances with husband Hrithik.

Our favourite collection was Dhody’s,with its unabashed use of colour. The showstopper was Sridevi in a Herve Leger gown seen earlier on Dhody, and wearing a white and yellow diamond necklace.
