A police team — consisting of two Deputy Superintendents of Police, three station officers and four other officers — was held hostage by residents of Behlolpur village, who on Friday, held a protest against police. The villagers alleged that police was attempting to derail the investigation into the death of Samajwadi Party leader Anil Yadav.
Yadav, the Gautam Buddh Nagar district secretary of the party, was found dead in a Noida flat in Sector 71 on April 20. Police said the death had been caused by asphyxiation due to hanging.
A case of murder against two persons was registered, based on a complaint from Yadav’s family. One of the accused, a woman, used to live in the flat in which Yadav’s body was found.
The police officers who were held hostage on Friday were released after the district administration intervened. The protest came to an end after the administration officials and police made promises on five counts — investigation into the victim’s viscera, CBI inquiry into the death, personal security for Anil’s brother, provision of arms licenses to his relatives and penal action against the SHO of Sector 58 police station.
Police said the protests began after residents of the area complained to police about a suspicious car that had been seen in the area. Once police team reached the spot, they were ambushed by locals of the area who refused to let them leave. Gradually, more people joined the crowd and began to make demands.
According to police sources, the woman named in the FIR is suspected to have been involved in a fake-currency case in Ghaziabad.
Yadav’s family members met the SSP of Gautam Buddh Nagar on Friday to put forward their demands. “We are carrying out a detailed investigation into the matter. Raids are being carried out and, and we are looking into the allegations that have been made,” the SSP said.
