At least six persons have been identified as suspects in the murder of Ghaziabad Municipal Councillor Sachin Chaudhary, police said on Monday. Two of the main accused have been arrested already, they said, but refused to divulge their names.
According to police, the accused are aged between 25 and 30 years, and were close to the victim. They had reportedly been trying to strengthen their friendship with him over the past one-and-a-half months.
One of the accused was also a moneylender, like Chaudhary, and it seems he wanted to get rid of the competition. There were no big moneylenders in that area, except these two, said Superintendent of Police (City) J K Shahi.
Chaudhary had filed an attempt-to-murder case under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code three months ago. The murder might have been committed by Chaudhary’s own people to implicate the person accused in the attempt-to-murder case, Shahi said.
Chaudhary (35) was found dead in his Santro car near the local branch of Punjab and Sind National bank, barely 300 metres from his Indrapuri house in Ghaziabad,on Thursday evening. There were bullet injuries in the back of his head, and two .32 bore bullets were recovered from his vehicle.
As the victim’s car was in good condition, police suspect the killers may have shot him while sitting in the rear seat. Chaudhary’s personal belongings including his gold chain, ring and watch were recovered.
Chaudhary’s family had reportedly told the police that he left his house at 7.30 pm on Thursday, after receiving a call on his mobile phone.
Chaudharys body was found an hour later, when a friend spotted his car and immediately informed his brother.
