Three armed persons fired at two Delhi Police constables in the capital’s busy Connaught Place area on Saturday night. Police said one of the attackers has been detained.
Barakhamba Road police station received a tip-off that three armed men were standing in Shankar Market, Connaught Place. The two constables, Prateek and Sandeep, who were on duty in the area were informed of this. On reaching the spot, they found the three men outside Super Bazaar and asked them to produce identity proof or documents relating to the same.
“The men realised they would be caught and fled. The constables then gave chase. While one of the men escaped through the railway underpass nearby, the other two took the bylane adjoining the market. Suddenly, one of the accused opened fire. The constables managed to overpower one of the men while the other managed to escape,” a senior police officer said.
Police said the accused had fired four rounds while the constables retaliated by firing one round.
“While chasing the men, Prateek tripped and sustained injuries. However, no one received a bullet injury,” the officer said.
An FIR has been filed under appropriate sections of the IPC, including obstructing the duty of a public servant and under sections of the Arms Act.
The accused, who hails from Moradabad, was reportedly thrashed by the public.
“A case has been registered at Barakhamba Road police station. We have detained one of the men. This is a serious matter as they opened fire at police personnel. We are making all efforts to identify them. Investigation is on,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) S B S Tyagi said.
