The students of Class VI,Apeejay School,worked on an international school award project titled ‘What’s On My Plate?’,during which they organised a food fair. The event involved a cross cultural comparison of the eating habits of teens in USA,England,China and India. They correlated the eating habits with the incidence of juvenile diabetes and obesity in children. Kindergarten students of the school,on the other hand,organised an exhibition showcasing a project titled ‘Stories from different parts of the world’. The various events comprised story enactment,music,dance and art-and-craft displays related to China,Arabia and Africa.

Book Week at Cambridge School,Indirapuram
Cambridge School,Indirapuram celebrated ‘Book Week’ from January 17 to 22. The youngsters strengthened their bond with books and the people who authored them by making bookmarks,book jackets and indulging in colouring activities. Bright ideas put forward by enthusiastic readers came alive through ‘Design a Wednesday Newspaper’ and book review competitions. Children availed of the opportunity to browse the books of their choice and express their fondness for reading. In a world that’s fast drifting towards the electronic media,something like this was essential.

‘Best out of waste’ exhibition at GD Salwan,Rajinder Nagar

Under the International School Award activity,students of Class IV and V of GD Salwan Public School,Rajinder Nagar,held an exhibition on recycling waste’. Among other things,the exhibition showcased baskets made of old newspapers,paper mache items,and decorative articles made of fused bulbs and ice-cream sticks. Exchange material received from its partner school in the United Kingdom was also displayed during the event.

St Mark’s School students excel in math exhibition
Parneet Singh and Radha Bhola of Class X-B of St Mark’s Sr Sec Public School,Meera Bagh,displayed commendable mathematical skills when they qualified for the national-level science exhibition after displaying their mathematics model on the Thales Theorem at the state-level Jawaharlal Nehru Science Exhibition held at Science Centre,Vasant Vihar. Among the 20 models drawn from various zones of Delhi,Thales Theorem was rated among the top five models,making it eligible for the national-level exhibition.

Ramjas holds inter-school debate in English and Hindi
The Ramjas Inter School Debate in English and Hindi was held at the Rai Kedarnath Auditorium. The preliminary rounds were held at Ramjas School,Pusa Road,and over 50 schools participated. As many as 10 teams,which made it to the finals in English,were Bal Bharti Public School,Pitampura; St Thomas School; Bal Bharti Public School,GRH Marg; Apeejay School,Sheikh Sarai; Birla Vidya Niketan; Dayawati Modi Academy,Meerut; Army Public School,Shankar Vihar; Vishwa Bharti School,Noida; Ahlcon Public School,and Ramjas School,Pusa Road. In Hindi,the ones that made it to the finals were Alwar Public School; St Thomas School; Dayawati Modi Academy,Meerut; Lovely Public School; Bal Bharti Public School,Pitampura; Ramjas School,RK Puram; Ramjas Sr Sec School No 5,and Ramjas School,Pusa Road. The judges for the debates were Priyadarshan,News Editor,NDTV; Dr Anamika,and Rosemary Marandi,senior correspondent,PTI. Salman Khurshid,Minister of State for Corporate Affairs,was the chief guest for the English debate. Bal Bharti Public School,Pitampura,lifted the rolling trophy in both English and Hindi. The runners up were Birla Vidya Niketan for the English debate,and Alwar Public School for the Hindi debate.

International Conference on Education held
The International Conference on Education-2011 was held on January 24 and 25. Educationists from Australia,Hong Kong,USA,Finland and Belgium spoke on techniques to improve the effectiveness of classroom teaching,enhanced pedagogy and assessment.

Kapil Kapoor,former pro-vice-chancellor, Jawaharlal Nehru University, spoke on the intellectual tradition of India.

Students from Springdales School,Pusa Road,delivered a rendition comprising prayers from different faiths,followed by a dance recital,Ganesh Stuti,by students from the Montessori wing of Salwan Public School,Rajinder Nagar. Girls from the Salwan Public School,Gurgaon,danced to the symbolic ‘CCE’ song.

The welcome address was delivered by Subhash Chandra Khuntia,Joint Secretary,Department of School Education and Literacy,MHRD,Government of India. The chief guest on the occasion was Kapil Sibal,Union Minister of Human Resource Development and Communications and Information Technology,Government of India.

Dinesh Singh,Vice Chancellor,University of Delhi,through various anecdotes and events from history,urged audiences to “think about it”. In the panel discussion chaired by R Govinda,Vice-Chancellor,National University of Educational Planning and Administration,New Delhi,panelists A B L Srivastava,Research Evaluation and Studies Unit,Technical Support Group,Ed CIL,and Avtar Singh,Head of the Department of Educational Measurement and Evaluation,NCERT,Delhi,discussed the reliability of assessment.

Vineet Joshi,Chairman,Central Board of Secondary Education,addressed the gathering and said that the 1,000 delegates present there could make a big difference in the scheme of things.

South African students visit Bluebells School
Students and teachers of Bluebells School are currently hosting a team from the Solvista Secondary School in Phoenix,which consists of two teachers and eight students. Kabbadi matches,tours to Delhi and Agra,class observation programmes and relishing Indian menus lie in store for the school’s South African friends. Making things better is the fact that Africa and India share a common past and a common perspective on freedom.

Republic Day at Abhinav Public School,Pitampura
On January 25,2011,Abhinav Public School celebrated Republic Day with full zeal and vigour. C K Saluja,professor,Central Institute of Education,was the chief guest. After the national flag was hoisted,a variety of cultural programmes was presented by primary and middle section students. A skit,which expressed hope of progress despite problems like corruption,terrorism and population explosion,was also presented.
