Sajjan lawyer hits back: Respect judgment

As protests over the acquittal of Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case intensified in the capital, his lawyer hit back, saying “it is strange that instead of respecting the judgment, baseless allegations are being levelled”.

As protests over the acquittal of Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case intensified in the capital, his lawyer hit back, saying “it is strange that instead of respecting the judgment, baseless allegations are being levelled”.

In a statement,Anil Kumar Sharma, counsel for Sajjan Kumar, said the “orders of the court are perfect” though “every effort was made to frame and implicate” his client in the riots case.

He said complainant Jagdish Kaur did not name Sajjan Kumar in her complaint to police on January 20,1985. She also “did not raise any accusing finger” against him in her affidavit dated September 9,1985. “There is no whisper of the name of Sajjan Kumar in her affidavit submitted before the Ranganath Misra Commission constituted for inquiring into the anti-Sikh riots,” Sharma said.

“This very affidavit resulted in providing big relief to Sajjan Kumar by the court… in 1992,Jagdish Kaur did not level any allegation against Sajjan Kumar in her statement before the riots cell of Delhi Police… She came out with a frivolous allegation for the first time after 16 years… in her affidavits filed before the Nanavati Commission constituted in the year 2000 by the NDA government at the Centre.”

“In this affidavit,Jagdish Kaur said that Sajjan Kumar was leading that mob which killed her husband Kehar Singh and son Gurpreet Singh on November 1,1984 whereas in this very affidavit she stated that on the next day i.e. November 2,when she went to the police post and saw Sajjan Kumar holding a meeting, she thought that Sajjan Kumar would help her in the cremation of the dead bodies of her husband, son and brothers but she was surprised that Sajjan Kumar was giving a provocative speech there,” Sharma said.

He questioned the “contradictory version of Jagdish Kaur” that on the one hand she claimed to have seen Sajjan Kumar leading a mob which killed her husband and son on November 1,1984 but the next day,she said she had asked Sajjan Kumar to help cremate the bodies.

“Jagdish Kaur clearly stated in court that when she was half a mile away from the police post, she saw and heard Sajjan Kumar addressing while standing in a jeep,” Sharma said, wondering “how is it possible for anybody to see and hear a person from a distance of about three-fourth of a kilometre when no loudspeaker was installed there”.

Sharma said “because of the contradictory and concocted statement of Jagdish Kaur, the entire story of the CBI proved to be totally false”.
