(Source: Express Photos)Badarpur MLA N D Sharma said on Tuesday that he rushed to the spot where three safai karmacharis were run over by a police sub-inspector on Tuesday morning as soon as he heard about the incident.

“The safai karmacharis were hired by private company Apollo, which had built the flyover they were cleaning. The safai karmacharis were hired by the company through a contractor. We have met the representatives of the company and told them that they should consider paying compensation of at least Rs 2 lakh to the families,” Sharma said.

At this stage, Sharma said, the police claim that the sub-inspector dozed off while driving. “We insisted on a medical examination to confirm that he was not under the influence of alcohol. He was taken for medical examination in the evening,” he said.
Sharma added that the Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was also looking into the matter. “I have met the families of the deceased. They are devastated by the sudden deaths,” Sharma said. An official said the government has asked for a report on the accident.
He said, as MLA from the area, he will also write to the government to provide the families suitable compensation. “They belong to very poor families and all have children. The families were enraged earlier in the day and asked to see the police sub-inspector. They needed to be calmed down,” Sharma said.
