(Express photo by Gajendra Yadav)Hours after a blast from a Hyundai i20 killed eight people and left over a dozen injured at Red Fort, police are questioning a Gurgaon resident under whose name the car was registered, sources said.
The man is learnt to have told investigators that he had sold the vehicle to someone else, and police are working with the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to ascertain the current owner. Investigators say they are probing whether the car changed hands more than once – first, from the Gurgaon resident to a man in Okhla, and then from him to a resident of Ambala.
According to sources, after ascertaining the vehicle number, investigators ran it against their database, and it was found that the car was last spotted on Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras in Southeast Delhi’s Badarpur in June.
According to sources, all documents related to the vehicle have been handed to investigators, and police forces of the respective states are coordinating to trace the current owner.
Home Minister Amit Shah has said that investigators will rely on CCTV footage as part of their probe.
“Within 10 minutes of receiving the information about the blast, teams from the Delhi Crime Branch and Delhi Special Branch arrived at the spot. The NSG and NIA teams, along with the FSL, have now started a thorough investigation. Orders have been given to examine all nearby CCTV cameras, and I have also spoken to the Delhi CP and the Special Branch in charge,” he said.
According to sources, police have collected samples from the scene and sent them for forensic analysis. This will further shed light on the nature of the blast and what caused it, officials said.
