Three persons deboarding a private bus were killed when the driver of a chartered bus, while trying to beat another to the next stop, lost control of the vehicle at the Meerut crossing here on Monday morning. The bus, which was plying between Modinagar and Noida, also hit a few other vehicles injuring some people.
The dead have been identified as Sandeep Verma,Prashant Verma and Mobin, all in their mid twenties. The bus first hit a motorcycle parked near the road, then an auto-rickshaw and a scooter before running over the victims.
Ghaziabad SSP Raghubir Lal said the incident is been probed and the bus has been impounded. Though the driver fled the scene we have his name and details. We are enquiring with Mahadev Travels, which owns the bus. We have informed the families of the victims and sent the bodies for post-mortem, added Lal.
Arshad,an 18-year-old painter, sustained injuries on the back, head and hands and is now in a state of shock. He came under a tyre of the bus,but survived miraculously, said a friend.
An FIR has been registered against the absconding bus driver at Sihani Gate police station under charges of rash and negligent driving amounting to murder.
Traffic management in Ghaziabad has been minimal over the past few weeks. A senior police officer said the post of SP Traffic has been lying vacant for six months and SP Crime has been given additional charge of traffic. Managing vehicles on the road is a challenging task and needs a dedicated officer, he added.
