Fatehjit Singh, a Punjabi singer with singles like Paranda, was arrested by the Delhi Police on Wednesday for his alleged involvement in arranging fake visas for people to go to the US through the “donkey routes”.
At large since March, Fatehjit was arrested at the Indira Gandhi International Airport.

“He confessed to arranging the fake visa for Gurpreet Singh to go to Brazil. He was involved in all five attempts to send Gurpreet to the US,” Usha Rangnani, Deputy Commissioner of Police (IGI Airport), said.

Gurpreet left India for Bhutan, and then for Thailand, before landing in Kazakhstan allegedly as part of the journey to realise the American Dream. “Gurpreet attempted to take the donkey route to the US five times, four in 2023, and once in 2024,” said Rangnani.

On March 8, 2023, Gurpreet Singh was deported from Almaty, Kazakhstan, after a couple of pages from his passport were found torn. Authorities in Kazakhstan assumed the torn pages could have been fake visas or fake immigration stamps.

All these routes for Gurpreet were allegedly arranged by an agent, Sultan Singh, 32. At Gurpreet’s instance, Sultan was arrested in March, the police said.

The torn pages on Gurpreet’s passport date back to a previous deportation in 2023, when Sultan got him a fake visa for Brazil. However, just before boarding the flight from Qatar, Sultan tore those pages and Gurpreet was sent back to India for the same. “Sultan charged Gurpreet Rs 50 lakh for the whole arrangement to send him to the US. He took an advance payment of Rs 10 lakh with the rest of the amount to be paid after Gurpreet reached the US,” said an officer involved in the operation.

“Sultan revealed that Fatehjit Singh, a Punjabi singer who has done shows abroad as well, was also involved in arranging routes for Gurpreet to get him to the US,” Rangnani said.

According to the police, Fatehjit needed money and met Sultan through work commitments. He took Rs 4 lakh as commission from Sultan, out of the Rs 10 lakh given by Gurpreet, to send him to the US. Fatehjit’s involvement in other cases of illegal immigration, in partnership with Sultan or others, is being investigated, the police said.

Fatehjit, 42, a native of Jalandhar, has multiple music videos on YouTube.
