Proposal for JNU V-C second term voted out

The Executive Council of the Jawaharlal Nehru University on Tuesday voted out the proposal to amend the JNU Act that would have allowed a second term to its present Vice-Chancellor B B Bhattacharya.

The Executive Council (EC) of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Tuesday voted out the proposal to amend the JNU Act that would have allowed a second term to its present Vice-Chancellor B B Bhattacharya. The proposal was not on the agenda but was taken up since a previous EC meeting on April 6 had deferred a decision on the matter after intense debate. V-C reportedly did not make any comments during Tuesday’s meeting,it was therefore not passed. The University community has been demonstrating over the matter —recent weeks have seen protest marches, pamphleteering and even a referendum by students on the question of whether the V-C should have a second term. Of the 2,741 students who had voted in the referendum,2,563 voted against a second term for the V-C.
