The Special Meeting of the Delhi Universitys Academic Council began on Thursday afternoon with two minutes of silence being observed in the memory of the victim who died after exposure to radiation from a Gamma Irradiator auctioned by the universitys Chemistry department.
Thursdays meeting is a crucial step towards the implementation of the semester system at the undergraduate level, approval of revised syllabi for 12 courses being the only item in its agenda.
The matter, however, had not been taken up for discussion till at the time of going to press. Members raised issues of procedural lapses in the implementation of the semester system, like exclusion of college teachers from the syllabus-making process.
It is learnt that elected teachers representatives have also demanded documents relating to the Empowered Committee on the Implementation of the Semester System be tabled. Some heads of departments have spoken up against the lack of transparency in the process.
That most syllabi were not peer reviewed before being tabled, and that the foundation courses in English and Maths that are to be offered to all students were not passed in the respective departments, were also criticised.
