Prisoner hangs self inside Tihar jail

Ram Kumar, a resident of Seemapuri, was convicted on charges of kidnapping and had been sent to Tihar a year back.

A 25-year-old prisoner committed suicide by hanging himself in his cell in Tihar jail around 6 pm on Wednesday. He had been convicted in a kidnapping case a year ago, jail authorities said.

“Ram Kumar, a resident of Seemapuri, was convicted on charges of kidnapping. He had been sent to Tihar a year back. Inmates of his cell found him hanging from the fan in his cell. Investigations are on to ascertain the reasons behind him having taken this extreme step,” Sunil Gupta, the PRO of Tihar Jail, said.

Jails officials said inmates are routinely allowed to stroll outside their cells from 3 pm to 6 pm in the evening. When the inmates from Kumar’s cell left at 3 pm, he stayed back. He then hanged himself from the fan with his pyjamas. When other prisoners entered the cell after their evening stroll, they found him hanging and alerted prison officials.

“Kumar was a quiet person and he did not share any of his troubles with either fellow prisoners or jail officials. He wasn’t depressed over anything as far as we know. So we are looking into the matter to ascertain the reason behind his suicide,” Gupta said.
