After the impressive vote share of 14 per cent in the last Assembly elections, the Bahujan Samaj Partys vote share has now dipped to 5.3 per cent in the Capital.
Besides BSP leaders, the Lok Sabha results have disappointed the BJP candidates, who were counting on BSP to eat into Congresss vote share, particularly among Muslims.
Among the BSP candidates, only Kanwar Singh Tanwar contested from South Delhi could cross 50,000 votes. He got 88,120 votes,a distant third behind BJPs Ramesh Bidhuri who got over 2.67 lakh votes.
Interestingly,Northeast Delhi candidate Haji Dilshad Ali,who defected to the Congress two days before the polls, drew 44,111 votes.
All party candidates in Delhi have lost their deposits,as their vote shares were less than 1/6th of the total votes cast in each constituency.
What is there to say at this point? We are going to Lucknow to analyse the results, but it appears the Dalits and Muslims did not vote for us. We certainly did not expect this, a senior advisor to BSP East Delhi candidate Mohammad Yunus said.
Tightlipped about the dismal show, most Delhi candidates and leaders of the party are going Lucknow, where they have been summoned by party supremo Mayawati for a meeting.
Senior party leader Ambeth Rajen, who was on his way to Lucknow when he spoke to Newsline, tried to play it down.
This is a normal trend. After the party does well in the Assembly elections, its vote share dips in the Lok Sabha election. In Uttar Pradesh we received 30.45 per cent votes in 2007 Assembly election, but our vote share in this election has dipped (to 27 per cent), he said.
He said the meeting in Lucknow was a regular post poll meeting.
