Post-poll Powercut

A quiet change has taken place at RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav’s official residence...

Till recently, these addresses were bustling with political activity. But after the Lok Sabha results, gloom and silence have descended upon them. Neha Sinha peeks into the official bungalows of those who have ceased to matter in the corridors of power

25,Tughlaq Road: A quiet change has taken place at RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav’s official residence. The ‘rail minister’ board is gone but ‘Lalu Prasad’ remains.

12,Janpath: After a fire recently, the bungalow of Lok Jan Shakti Party leader Ram Vilas Paswan has been restored. Everything is intact and still. And the staff is defensive: “No plans of moving have been made. In any case,if we have to move, there is a month’s grace period. But we are not letting anybody from the media in.”

14,Akbar Road: A Golden Amaltas and a banana grove nod in the mid-day heat at Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar’s residence. “While there is no immediate talk of leaving,Shri Aiyar does have a home in Sainik Farms,” says his staff. After the defeat, there is “no question” of leaving Delhi; “he will very much stay in Delhi”.

11,Safdarjung Road: Its occupant became famous for the ban on smoking in public and in films. Now,the bungalow is deserted after the rout of the PMK in the elections (not a single seat won). Of late, footfall has drawn a blank. “Not many people come here. Mr (Anbumani) Ramadoss is in Tamil Nadu. Perhaps the family will move back there,” the staff says.

7,Kamaraj Lane: Shankar Singh Vaghela’s staff says he “will continue living in the house”. Like many others who are no longer MPs,Vaghela is travelling. “His political timetable is unknown,” they say.
