Three Delhi ladies give traditional craft a trendy makeover

It was a lunch that celebrated the launch of the platform Cultivate, the idea being to add some modern flavour to ethnic Indian crafts. Befittingly,a cooler version of the conventional thali was used to serve the meal at Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai. While guests, that included renowned London curator Janice Blackburn admired the tableware in silver and gold,it was the threesome — designer Gunjan Gupta, gallerist Aparajita Jain and Feroze Gujral — the women behind Cultivate who were all smiles.

The Dinner Stack designed by Delhi-based Gupta (extreme right),which was showcased at Sotheby’s last summer is closely associated with the conceptualisation of the venture. “I wanted to get feedback on the set and approached Feroze, that is when we got talking about the need to modernise traditional craft,” says Gupta, who also had a similar chat with Jain. After a few months of research that included discussions with auction houses like Sotheby’s and Christie’s,the trio launched the platform Cultivate last month. “We intend to represent Indian art and culture internationally and in India. It is important to contemporise the crafts. It would generate more interest if it offers something new,” says Gujral. While they hope to assist local craftsmen in the process, the projects taken on would cut across the field of art, design and textile. “It could be anything, from sarees to artwork. We will also organise relevant discussions,” dds Gujral.

On the lookout for craftspeople who can be assigned projects, the collaborative platform will seek financial assistance from private companies and individuals. “There are a lot of people who are keen to sponsor projects and do something for the sake of traditional and public art, however they don’t have a platform,” says Jain, pointing out that already, several projects are underway. There are no deadlines set for their completion though. “We do not want to be pressed with a time limit,” says Jain. The connoisseurs, consequently, will have to wait and watch.
