Here are six Indian plays you should not miss at NSD’s theatre fest

Ecdysis: It’s about three people from India —a woman,her husband and her mysterious uncle —who live in Linz,Austria. It’s about Indians trying to gain new identities in foreign countries. It’s about watching director Arjun Raina switch between German,Hindi and Punjabi as he plays all three characters. The play was premiered in Linz. On January 11 at LTG Auditorium.

Spinal Cord: It is the Malayalam stage adaptation of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s Chronicle of a Death Foretold,about a murder revisited after 27 years. Protagonist Angela’s two brothers had planned to kill her former lover Santiago. The whole town knew how and when they would kill; only Santiago was ignorant. Director Deepan Srinivasan says,“I’ve made Santiago’s mother the narrator. Sleepless,she walks at night talking about him. Sometimes,she pushes a pram,old and rusty,with a puppet-like doll,old and dusty.” On January 12 at Bahumukh.

Rhinoceros: An adaptation of Eugene Ionesco’s famous play. The story revolves around a lone man in a town where everyone else has turned into rhinos. The 75-minute play in English is directed by Vinay Kumar. On January 15 at Sri Ram Centre.

Chronotopia: Modern,abstract and unconventional. This multimedia extravaganza challenges the concepts of time and space by placing stylised physical movements in a digitally constructed and changing stage architecture. The central character is represented by three dancers through whom the piece travels through rural,urban,historical,mythical and contemporary landscapes. On January 19 at Abhimanch.

When We Dead Awaken: Henrik Ibsen’s play meets Ratan Thiyam’s genius. Sculptor Arnold Rubek is estranged from his wife and in love with the beautiful Irene. One day,she leads him to a mountaintop where they die in an avalanche. Thiyam infuses dance,music and dramatic lighting to create an out-of-the-world visual experience. Be there even if you don’t understand Manipuri. On January 22 at Kamani.

Are You Home Lady Macbeth?: In the Bard’s Macbeth,kings and witches co-exist,igniting ambition,casting spells,murdering,revenging as well as eating and drinking a lot. Director Maya Krishna Rao’s Lady Macbeth goes with the flow. The play is about a witch-like woman who playfully recreates characters of Lady M and M. But a witch and a queen cannot co-exist in the same person for long. So,she must either “rub herself out of existence or re-find herself in another form”. The production is to swings from the comic to the tragic . On January 22 at Bahumukh.
