Peak demand expected to cross 6,000 MW this year: Power dept

Delhi recorded its highest power demand this season last Thursday when it reached 5,653 MW against the previous record of 5,642 MW on July 5 last year. “If the demand peaked in June then we should expect the demand to go much higher in July or August. We expect the peak demand to increase above 6,000 MW this year,” a senior official in the Power department said.

“A meeting with departments concerned has been called next week to discuss the power situation. In Delhi,so far,we have not had a shortage of power and intend to keep it that way,” Dikshit said.

Delhi has reeled under unscheduled power cuts this summer,much to Dikshit’s chagrin in an election year.

According to Dikshit,the government-run Delhi Transco Limited (DTL),responsible for the transmission of power in the city is also to blame. “I have to admit there has been some laxity on the part of DTL and they have been directed to pull up their socks with immediate effect,” Dikshit said.
