A 21-year-old patient, apparently upset with his medical condition that had shown little improvement despite a surgery two years ago, attacked a doctor with a knife during consultation at Delhi’s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital Tuesday, police said.

The man has been identified as Rajkumar, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Sanjay Kumar Sain . He has been sent to police custody. He was being treated by Dr Satnam Chhabra, chairman of the neurosurgery department, since 2021. Dr Chhabra sustained minor injuries in the attack.

Doctors at the hospital along with the administration will hold an emergency meeting in this regard on Thursday.

According to police, Rajkumar came to the Karol Bagh hospital around 3.50 pm on Tuesday for his consultation with Dr Chhabra. “Suddenly, he became furious and tried to attack the doctor with a sharp knife that is usually used in peeling fruits,” said Sain.

Rajkumar was overpowered by the hospital staff, who also informed the police. The police rushed to the hospital and took Rajkumar into custody. On the complaint of the doctor, legal action was initiated against the patient under the Prevention of Violence against Doctors and The Medical Professionals and Medical Institution Bill, 2018.

According to hospital sources, Rajkumar was disturbed about his ill- health and got agitated during his consultation. The exact brain condition Rajkumar was suffering from was not immediately clear. “He was clinically depressed and upset over the fact that he was not getting better despite continuous treatment for two years,” said an official source from the hospital.

Gangaram hospital sources said Rajkumar had kept the knife concealed in his pocket before the attack.

On the condition of anonymity, a doctor said that it is a matter of huge risk for doctors and other patients if someone can enter the hospital with a knife and carry out an attack.“This is the first time I am seeing this. We have heard of it but seeing it for the first time happening in front of our eyes…,” he said.

A senior doctor from Gangaram said that the emergency meeting will be held on Thursday, 12 pm.

Sources said Rajkumar had slipped into depression after the surgery performed on him two years ago.
