Odisha lecturer harassment: The Odisha Police on Thursday arrested a guest lecturer at a prominent state-run institution in Bhubaneswar for allegedly sexually harassing a minor student.
Hours before his arrest, the guest lecturer was terminated from service following protests and a road blockade by students, who demanded strict action against the accused. The students alleged that the accused teacher had been harassing female students and claimed that he had sought “sexual favours” in exchange for better grades.
Officials said the accused teacher joined the institution in June this year as a guest lecturer while the process of regular teacher appointment is underway. The state Culture Department has formed a three-member committee to probe the allegations.
A senior government official said students were told they could come forward with their complaints against the teacher “before the internal complaint committee, the principal, or the Culture Department without any fear”.
Police said the accused teacher was arrested based on a complaint by the principal of the college. He has been arrested under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and BNS sections 74 (using criminal force on women), 79 (insulting the modesty of women) and 296 (obscene acts and songs).
