(Express photo by Amit Mehra)On the fourth day of the ‘paani satyagraha’, Atishi’s health continued to dip with doctors suggesting she discontinue her fast but the water minister declined to do so.
Amid party workers and supporters — who later took out a candlelight march on Jangpura Road in solidarity with her — Atishi, who has been on an indefinite fast since June 21 protesting against alleged reduced supply of water by the Haryana government, said she would go on.
According to a party statement, Atishi’s weight is decreasing “unexpectedly” and had dipped from 65.8 kg to 63.6 kg on the fourth day of the fast. Her blood pressure levels and blood sugar also dropped to 71mg/dL and 110/70 mmhg respectively, while her ketone levels which indicated positive, may leave a long-term health impact, doctors have warned.
Atishi said she would continue the fast. “The Haryana government has been supplying 100 MGD less water to Delhi for the past three weeks. 100 MGD water means 46 crore litres of water, this quantity of water comes into use for 28 lakh people in Delhi,” she said in a video message posted on X on Monday.
In the evening, a delegation from the Trinamool Congress including Mahua Moitra, Sagarika Ghose and Pratima Mondal was present at the fast site, seated on the podium with Atishi and other senior AAP leaders.
“It is inhuman to deprive people of water… the BJP government should be ashamed of its acts, they should keep in mind the rights of the people. I urge the Haryana government to release the deficit water and extend full support to the AAP,” Moitra alleged, with TMC leaders reiterating their support for Atishi and urging the Haryana government to address the issue immediately.
Delhi Minister Gopal Rai said, “From tomorrow there will be five Ministers who will present their concerns; if the Haryana government doesn’t take action… the concerns of the public will also be presented at the fast site.”
