When Michael Angelo Batio strums his guitar,he makes sure people listen to him with complete attention. Its not just because Batio is a prolific strummer; the man who has invented the double and the quad guitar is also one of the most well-known shredders of the genre. In Delhi for a concert during his maiden India tour,Batio played to a crowd of 350 heavy metal fans at Kuki in GK- II recently. I love the sound of metal, and the aggression that it conveys, he says. Metal has always been inside me I became famous doing what I love, adds the 54-year-old American, who also goes by his initials MAB.
After completing his bachelors,Batio, who had been playing the piano and the guitar since elementary school, moved to LA,where he signed under Atlantic records with a heavy metal band called Holland. The band later split up and Batio went on to work with several other heavyweights, including Mark Tremonti (Alter Bridge/Creed),Rudy Sarzo (Ozzy Osbourne),and toured with Aerosmith. He released his first solo album Proud to be Loud in 1987,and founded his own record label M.A.C.E in 1999. Batio was dubbed the No. 1 Shredder of All Time in 2003 by Guitar One Magazine. But I still wanted to do something that nobody had ever done before, he says. So he went on to improvise on the form of the guitar and came up with the double and the quad guitar,in which the latter has top two guitars with seven strings, and the bottom two,six strings each. These apart,Batio has also custom-made a 29-fret guitar made of military grade aluminum. He is currently working on his new album, scheduled to come out next year.
