The Sarai Kale Khan-end of the Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station, which has been in shambles for many years now,is set for a heritage facelift. The Delhi Division of the Northern Railway has drawn up a beautification plan for the Nizamuddin railway station on the Sarai Kale Khan ISBT side.
On one side, the Nizamuddin station opens to Mathura Road and on the other end it opens to Sarai Kale Khan.
As Sarai Kale Khan is predominantly used by commuters and the station is close to monuments like Humayuns Tomb,Old Fort and Hazrat Nizamuddin shrine,a beautification plan needs to be done in keeping with the areas heritage value, Neeraj Sharma, spokesperson of Northern Railway, said.
According to the revamp plan, the premises would be spruced up with walkways made of heritage stones and restored foot overbridges. Currently, the Sarai Kale Khan exit is in a dilapidated state, with debris surrounding the foot overbridge.
A beautification plan is being worked out to restore the Sarai Kale Khan-end. The passage leading to the foot overbridge would be redone with red stones. All the debris will be removed, Sharma said.
The Railways is also in talks with the Aga Khan Foundation to finalise the plan for the makeover. The Delhi division of the Northern Railway has also written to the South Municipal Corporation to allot additional land outside the railway station for the project.
We have made a request to the South corporation to allot the space adjoining the station to the Railways. The space will be used to improve parking facility, the official said.
According to an official estimate, around 2.5 lakh passengers use the Nizamuddin station every day.
