A schools initiative from The Indian Express
Quest is a project conducted by The Indian Express in schools in and around Delhi. On the eve of Independence Day,we asked students to share their vision of India,to tell us where they would want their country to go and what its core values should be. It was heartening to receive so many entries and read what the students envision for their country. Here we publish a selected few.
I am proud to be an Indian and dream a lot for my beloved country. The first and foremost dream I have for India is to see her in category of most developed nations of this world. I dream of an India which is 100 per cent literate, where everyone is employed and there is absolutely no poverty. India has been a messenger of peace even in past as it was India that mooted the very idea of Vasudhaiv Kutumbkam (The entire world is my family). Hence,I wish India to play a leading role in establishing peace and tranquility across the world, which is really the need of the hour. Finally,I wish India to become world’s biggest economic power with a major role in world trade, and focus on technology advancements, and a big leap in infrastructure developments.

I dream of a developed India that is free from illiteracy and poverty,an India where the gap between the rich and the poor is within acceptable limits,an India that realises its a free domain, and an India that is free from corruption. But presently this is not happening at all. We are still apathetic to the needs of the poor man on roads. We still splurge money on our needs, while the underprivileged still struggle to get a days meal. This apathy and obliviousness to all social evil takes us nowhere. If we have to achieve this dream then we have to act now to build an India in which todays underprivileged youth succeed tomorrow and contribute to the growth of tomorrow, and a country where every educated soul understands the importance of giving back what he has taken from the society. And to realise this dream,we should unite and come together.

No nation is perfect. It is the citizens who have to make it perfect. I dream of an India where citizens are considerate and want to shoulder the duty towards their nation. And to help the citizens of our country we need an education system that does not test our memory but our intellect, one that makes children rational, modern and thoughtful adults. I dream of an India where people practice the difference between right and wrong and follow the path of truth. I wish to see an India where everybody gets a fair chance to prove ones capability and the unfortunate children of our nation, who are plagued with poverty, are also helped. I want an India where all citizens stand united to fight the evils facing the nation and can reflect the spirit that got us our freedom.

I no longer want India to be a superpower in the manner I wanted it to be when I was naive and without a broader perspective. I no longer want it to be another big and brawny US. I dont want it to be a superpower made up of just brains and brawn and all about GDP performance and military might. Rather and more pressingly,I want India to have a heart. Having a heart, unlike GDP growth and a military beef-up,does not just relate to macro-economic and political issues. For a real superpower, having a heart essentially has micro implications, for each of us. Each of us can soon belong to a mighty nation, but then what is the point of belonging to one if we continue to indulge in or turn a blind eye to child labour? Are we ready yet to ask for the age of our servants or avoid reporting restaurants where cleaners are boys who should be in school? All our trees can make way for ultra-modern townships. But then do we just want to belong to a superpower and pollute, without caring about our environmental legacy we leave behind for our children? Are we ready to replace brutal ragging at our educational institutions with warmer welcoming gestures? Are we there yet, when we care to build infrastructure that can also be used by handicapped people? Lets keep moving onto bigger things. Lets become a real superpower. A superpower that beats with a super heart.

India today is flooded with many things that are an obstacle to development such as poverty, corruption, unemployment etc. In my dream India, all these things will not be there and everyone will have the right to express his/her views. In such an India, every community will be satisfied with the government and there will be no caste and religious divisions. All people will be equal. There will be no poverty and everyone will have sufficient food to eat and everyone will have employment. There will be no corruption, nor will there be the threat of terrorism. Everybody will be safe and women will not be harassed in my dream India.

When I pass by beggars sitting along the roadside,I try to console myself that my presence will one day affect their lives. I dont dream that one day India will be this or that, but that someday I will help make it a true superpower where the poverty levels are low and there is technological and educational growth. By education,I dont only mean textbook learning, but learning with an emphasis on morals. My dream India will be a place without corruption. My dream India will be a place for scientific thoughts. Maybe today it is a dream, but tomorrow,it will be the truth, surely.
